Once upon a time there was a little girl named Marian, and she had a doll called Big Mary. Marian loved Big Mary, and meant to be very good to her. But sometimes she was not. Santa Claus had brought Big Mary one snowy Christmas night, and he had brought also a great many pretty clothes for her to wear. There were three dresses, a warm red one for winter, and a white one, very thin, for summer, and still another, of beautiful blue silk with lace on it, for best. Then, also, there were little skirts, and tiny stockings, and pretty little shoes with shiny buckles and real heels, and there was a pink parasol, and, best of all, a dear little muff, made of soft white fur, to keep Big Mary's hands warm in cold weather.

"Once upon a time there was a little girl named Marian, and she had a doll called Big Mary.And thus begins this short story from 1913 of the little freckled frog who gained something more important that a closet of clothes.
One day, the little girl neglects to dress her doll, Big Mary, and Big Mary catches a chill and gets sick. The doctor prescribes full sun and full dress for Big Mary. Meanwhile, a little freckled frog sees the doll in all her laces and furs and wishes she, too, had pretty clothes to wear to Red Robin’s upcoming big garden party. A few of her garden neighbors – the spider, the caterpillar, and the butterfly – help Freckled Frog whip together an outfit for her, but not before the crabby Morning Glories snub her.
“Now Robin Redbreast . . . always had his parties just at twilight” and it’s a success. Even Big Mary shows up. Freckled Frog has a grand time and dances with her cousin Billy Bullfrog, too.
Because the little freckled frog has a kind heart, she throws her own party – she even tells the caterpillar to “just eat cherries, and have a good time” – and she again approaches the crabby morning glories, but this time in the cool of the morning, because, as the little spider told her, “they are apt to be cross on hot days. [because] it’s the heat of the afternoon that makes those flowers cranky”. All turns out well in the end when Freckled Frog gains something very important to her psyche.
This is an adorable little story that is very appropriate for readers of all ages that teaches the importance of being kind and getting along with others. I laughed at the thought of the doll being called “Big Mary,” since it conjured up a tough little street-smart cookie in my mind who carries a pack of smokes rolled up in her dress sleeve, but that’s not so. Her name the little girl gives her just gave me a “tough doll “impression. The “big” part relates to her size, I’m sure.

it was free for the kindle fire hd and it was a cute story. would be good to read to a child.
this was a cute little story for a 4 year old. it was about 9 pages long and only took a few minutes to read.
This is a short story but very cute. It is a very moral story about true beauty and how best to treat one's neighbors, even if the neighbors are a bit sensitive.
Obviously not Charlotte Bronte's best work, and I think the translation for this book seems off, like things are either missing or repeated over and over again.
This is a very cute story to read to young kids (under 10) I think if I had young kids at home now I would read it and then play dress up with the kids just for fun.
Victorian books for children carry the same glimpse into the culture of the times that our own children's books do, only it's easier to see it from this perspective of a hundred years or so. I was hoping for more insight, but it is what it is. I'm interested in fairy tales, and thought this might be more than an anthropomorphication of animals and flowers, but it isn't.
I really wanted to like this children's story as I so admire the Brontë sisters talent, but this one fell too far short of expectstions. It reads like an adult trying to be a child and failing...its about a little frog who learns the lesson that being a good friend is more important that being beautiful. What makes it even less effective is that today's children are not as in touch with nature, i.e. frogs, spiders and morning glory flowers as in Brontë's time, unless they live on a farm, so there is very little for a modern city kid to relate to.
Its one saving grace is that is is quite short and so it still might be of interest with supporting visuals or done in a classroom with students playacting out the different parts...
